From Nationalmuseum, Stockholm:
Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) painted his intimate study La Conversation in 1878. Its free brushwork makes it an excellent example of the artist's perfected impressionist style of the 1870s. The man in the painting is Renoir's good friend, the artist Samuel Frédéric Cordey (1854-1911). The young woman in front of him has been identified as Margot (Marguerite Legrand), one of Renoir's favourite models between 1875 and '79. The painting was owned by the Parisian art dealer Durand-Ruel until 1918, when it was acquired by Nationalmuseum with the financial support of claims agent C Pinaeus and banker G A Kylberger.
