From National Museum of Wales:
This work was probably painted in the garden of the house at Essoyes in Burgundy where Renoir spent his summers from 1898. Its warm palette is typical of Renoir's late style. The pastoral subject-matter looks back, beyond Manet's Dejeuner sur l'herbe, to Venetian Renaissance art. It was purchased by Gwendoline Davies in Paris in 1917.
